A Wildly Magical Disney World Stay

All you need to know about Animal Kingdom Lodge

In 2026, our family finally made the cross-country trek from California to Orlando for a Walt Disney World adventure—and it did not disappoint.

Starting Strong at Animal Kingdom Lodge

From the moment we arrived, staying at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge set the tone for the entire trip. We’re a pretty outdoorsy family who loves nature and animals, so waking up each morning to giraffes, zebras, and other wildlife wandering just outside our “backyard” felt unreal. Coffee on the balcony while watching animals roam the savanna? Absolute magic.

While you will pay more for the savanna view- it is worth the splurge!

The resort itself felt like a destination, not just a place to sleep. The African-inspired architecture, peaceful atmosphere, and immersive theming made it the perfect place to recharge after long park days. Honestly, it was an amazing way to start and end each day.

A Resort That Feels Like a Safari

Animal Kingdom Lodge doesn’t just lean into its theme—you’re fully surrounded by it. Waking up to giraffes, zebras, ankole cattle, and other animals roaming the savanna outside your room is something you simply can’t replicate anywhere else on Disney property. It turns quiet moments—morning coffee or winding down after the parks—into memorable experiences.

For families who love nature and animals, this resort feels especially magical. The resort does have some additional opportunities to do a night safari (which will costs you extra), we did not opt for it this time. Many people said it was definitely worth it! The resort does include many free activities as well, such as art walks, campfires certain nights for kids (with marshmallow roasting included), large pools, complete with slides, and more (depending on the week you go). Make sure you bring a pair of binoculars to elevate the magic! We bought these simple binoculars and I bought some cute zoofari ones for my little guy.

Standout Dining Options Right at the Resort

One of the biggest perks of staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge is access to some of Disney World’s most unique dining—without ever leaving the resort. Here is a quick rundown of the dining options at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Boma – Flavors of Africa
Boma is a guest favorite for a reason. This buffet-style restaurant blends African-inspired dishes with familiar options, making it approachable for adventurous and cautious eaters alike. It’s especially popular for breakfast, with everything from Mickey and Simba waffles to bold, spiced flavors that feel like a culinary trip around the continent. You can do the breakfast buffet or the lunch/dinner buffet. I have a picky eater in my crew so I made sure that along with some of the adventurous African inspired food (that I had to try!) they also offered basic food my kiddo would eat. Boma did not disappoint! Everyone definitely left overstuffed!

Jiko – The Cooking Place
For a more elevated dining experience, Jiko delivers. Known for its African-inspired menu and impressive wine selection, this signature restaurant is perfect for a relaxed evening meal or a special night away from the parks. The atmosphere alone makes it worth the visit.

Sanaa
Located in Kidani Village, Sanaa offers one of the most unique dining settings at Disney World—floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the savanna. Watching animals wander by while enjoying Indian- and African-inspired dishes is unforgettable. The Indian-style bread service is a standout and a must-try.

The Mara (Quick Service)
For something fast, affordable, and surprisingly good, The Mara was a go-to. This quick-service spot offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner options that are both filling and reasonably priced by Disney standards. It’s perfect for grabbing food on the way to the parks or winding down after a long day. It is open most of the day and into the evenings, which was perfect since our flight was delayed and we did not get in until 10pm on the first night. We were still able to grab a quick bite to eat before tucking in for the night.

Saving Money with David’s Vacation Club Rentals

I'll admit that I was hesitant on this at first. I had never heard of David's Vacation Club Rentals before and I wanted to ensure it was legit. After I read many reviews from other travel bloggers, I took the risk and it was well worth it! We saved a significant amount by booking our stay through David’s Vacation Club Rentals, which allowed us to experience Animal Kingdom Lodge at a much lower cost than booking directly through Disney. We were also still able to get the Savanna views I so looked forward to!

Another major benefit of booking through the vacation club was that their rooms came with a small kitchen. Being able to make our own breakfasts—simple things like cereal, fruit, and coffee—helped us cut down on food costs and made mornings easier and more relaxed.

The Perks of Staying on Disney Property

Extra Magic Hours

Staying at a Disney hotel definitely came with some perks. One of the biggest advantages was Extra Magic Hours—30 extra minutes most mornings, plus two days with extended evening hours during our stay.

Since we were coming from the West Coast, early mornings were… ambitious. 😴 We made the strategic choice to sleep in a bit and take advantage of the evening hours instead, which turned out to be the perfect move. The parks at night were cooler, less crowded, and honestly felt even more magical once the sun went down.

Transportation

Another great perk of staying on Disney property was the robust transportation system. Once at Animal Kingdom Lodge we were able to access the complimentary buses to and from the parks, including Disney Springs. This saved us money from having to rent a car and pay for parking at the parks. I found the buses to be quick and efficient. We never waited more than 18 minutes for a bus and there was plenty of room to sit. The bus stops even included shade and benches. Aside from the buses, we accessed the Skyliner (my kids thought this was the most fun way to travel!), boats, and the tram system. All were very easy, convenient, and even fun to ride!

Final Thoughts

Animal Kingdom Lodge isn’t just a Disney resort—it’s a destination in itself. Between the world-class dining and the unique savanna views it offers an experience that feels both indulgent and intentional.

If you’re a family that loves nature, animals, and a slightly slower, more immersive Disney experience, Animal Kingdom Lodge is hard to beat. We came for the rides and fireworks, but we’ll remember the giraffes just as much.

✨ Already dreaming about the next trip.
